About the author

Michael Lowry is Hurricane Specialist and Storm Surge Expert for WPLG-TV in Miami, Florida. In his role at WPLG, Michael directs the station’s hurricane coverage, including daily on-air tropical updates, specials, stories, and online content.

Michael’s career has spanned tropical weather research, forecasting, broadcasting, and emergency management. As senior scientist at the National Hurricane Center, he led the development of groundbreaking new storm surge forecasts and public warnings and most recently as disaster planning chief at FEMA, he was responsible for overhauling the agency’s master hurricane response plan after the deadly and destructive 2017 hurricane season.

Michael was previously tropical program lead and hurricane expert for The Weather Channel in Atlanta, where he guided a national audience through dozens of storms and hurricanes, including Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Michael began his career in emergency management with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, where he supported nine presidentially declared disasters, including seven hurricane disaster declarations in 2004 and 2005.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in meteorology from Florida State University.
