How are you doing today? I understand they have more than 99% power restored to the state's customers. I hear they made great progress in Sanibel and Pine Island. How are things in Punta Gorda?
Downtown is pretty much back to normal except for a few broken windows that are boarded up. Most of us in my neighborhood worked together to clean up debris, tarp homes, etc. We had dinners in the early evening at the clubhouse where everyone brought what they could to heat on grills until the power came on a few days ago. There are still some areas without power but they are working hard to get it back. A few areas that had gotten power back lost it again for a time but Florida Power and Light are really busting their butts right now. Most of the other companies who came to assist have gone on to other areas to help. Right now most of us are waiting on the insurance companies. Roofing, building contractors, etc already have 1 to 2 year waiting lists going so no one expects to get everything fixed quickly. I know my dad had to wait almost 2 years after Charley. Yesterday a couple of my neighbors went up and nailed a tarp over the hole in my laundry room roof which is great as we are expecting rain. I am going out in a few minutes to tape heavy plastic sheeting over the missing winds in my lanai. After that it is just a hurry up and wait. Not going to worry about it as most of life has settled down to fairly normal. Do wish the grocery stores would get in meat, dairy and eggs soon. No meat at all and very little of the other two.
I never had a problem with DirecTV in Michigan, not as good down here. Never had a tornado in Pontiac but just a bit north of us in the Holly-Fenton area and across Huron Valley they would get quite a few. Saw one from a friend's backyard one day that was farther north and had one pass overhead one day while I was sitting at a light in Clarkston. Heard this godawful noise and couldn't tell where it was coming from until I looked up. Scared the hell out of me as it was only a couple hundred feet up but it didn't touch down until about 50 miles further on. Never had large hail just the small pea sized stuff. Insurance adjuster was just here and I found my roof was worse off than I thought, they are going to authorize replacing the whole thing.
Great article. Good information. Also I like your writing style.
I like it too, Patti. I like his daily updates and I like his South Florida perspective on things.
This page was a great help this season, especially when it came to the bugger, Ian.
I am glad to have kept you informed, too, before and after Ian. We have had great conversations on Substack!!
We did and those helped me make the decisions I did regarding what to do when it came time.
