Yes, and even though the rainy season may be over, regular old fall and winter thunderstorms can still occur. Some are quite violent; you should have seen the lightning last evening at Fort Pierce. It was on a web cam of Ft. Pierce on a site called Surf Guru. There was a spectacular light show; there HAD been a tornado warning for that storm; the Weather Channel was on it for awhile including that web cam. It lightninged for a couple hours at least. Also at Cape Canaveral, too. Possible repeat in some places today.
The thunderstorms down here are quite something. Back in Michigan when I was 4 lightning blew a hole in the roof of my bedroom. In my own first house lightning hit a tree beside my driveway and in the same storm knocked a big, very thick trunked tree on top of a house at the end of my block. I was at a park, also in Michigan waiting for a 10K race when a hellacious storm came up and we all took cover in a concession stand by the beach. Two men were killed by lightning on the golf course on the other side of the lake during it. As a consequence of all of these I am really unsettled during these storms. Coming back from Ft Meyers airport one night I think the sky stayed lit up with lightning nearly the whole trip back. I have had more than once been pretty much levitated off my bed or chair by lightning striking close by. I never take a Florida thunderstorm lightly, actually none of them anywhere.
I am sure you have quite a respect for lightning!! The thunderclaps from these close strikes had to have been extremely loud. It likely could be the explosive thunder that knocked you out of bed or a chair. Unless the electrical current goes through your house. You certainly have had scary experiences with these storms, LOL!! The storm last night I had seen around 7 P.M. and yes it was a confirmed tornado somewhere around Fort Pierce that damaged a few homes, it was only an EF-0 but it displaced at least ONE family. The warning was in effect till 7:15; the circulation died near the shoreline on radar. This afternoon I saw on a web cam, a heavy rainstorm with a few lightning flashes in Cancun, Mexico. Winds were calm.
I say the hurricane season is pronounced dead.
A real relief.
