I am surprised at how little rain we got here in Punta Gorda, Two brief but heavy showers and a very little bit of wind. I went out to Charlotte Harbor as Idalia was passing us way out in the Gulf and even saw a brief bit of sun. What a relief after Ian last year and the uncertainty about Idalia right up until last night. I feel much empathy though for the people up in the Big Bend area and inland there. I don't wish this on anybody.
Sure, the threat is to the shipping lanes. What they mean is that a storm is out to sea, away from land, therefore, it is "safely over the ocean". However, tell that one to the Andrea Gail fishing boat that sank in the Halloween Storm of 1991. Tell that to the lost crew of the Al Farro, all 33 hands went down in THAT hurricane, Jacquin, a number of years back. Tell me the storms were "safely over the ocean" NOT!!

As a lifelong professional Mariner, I bristle at the phrase, “Safely over the ocean.”
