After critical feedback, Navy officials step in to keep data flowing from three U.S. Defense-operated weather satellites scheduled to go dark this week
Thank you for the info Mr. Lowry. At least someone(s) up above decided to show some sense. Those satellites are absolutely needed and not just for us in areas threatened by hurricanes.
They can analyze typhoons, Australia cyclones, Bay of Bengal cyclones, anywhere around the world, so yes, they are important satellites, but this program will end anyway in September 2026. What happens THEN? Will new satellites be able to be available to be launched so we can still have microwave data? I would hope so!!
If the satellites are going to fail then they should have sense enough to have new ones ready now to launch to replace them. If they stupidly plan to shut the program down then whoever the idiots in charge are should be replaced. Maybe put the callous ummm, well, people inn front of the next EF3 or greater tornado or on the shore where the next storm surge will happen so maybe they can become more empathetic towards those who have to live with such dangers. Personally think the whole blasted administration needs replacing considering the bonehead decisions being made. I suppose I sound a bit uncaring myself but I'm sick of penpushers screwing up and often costing lives in several areas of government.
You should at lEAST be happy the satellites got extended for another year. Let's hope they DO launch new ones.......I expect that Space X will launch new replacements.
It wasn't security issues. It was due to NOAA budget cuts. I think that's the REAL reason. Somehow, they found money to keep operating them, maybe it's due to the Big Beautiful Law.
So what is the plan for next year, after “the program formally ends in September 2026” (in the heart of that year’s hurricane season)—or when the satellites’ lifespan ends in the coming year or two?
Cross that bridge when you come to it Jim. I normally don't like to say that. But with all the 💩 lately, I'll take satellite info for at least one year!
Great news--always look forward to your updates!
Now, what happens when the program ends in September 2026? Will we back in crisis again?
Thanks for your and others' work to keep this important data flowing. I'm sure you saved lives today. 👍
Yes, potential future lives.
Great news. Here’s hoping there’s nothing to see this year :-)
Thank you for all your efforts to make this happen.
Thanks for fighting the good fight!
Excellent work! Should have never gotten to this point.
Wow - it's actually good news???
*wait, what?*
**jaw drops**
***shock sets in***
Ty Mr. Lowry - for always helping us to understand >> appreciate you ⚘

I really hope so.
Thanks for the good news, Michael!
I still have never seen a plausible or even specific explanation of the security issues.

My deepest appreciation (especially since I live on the northwest shore of Pensacola Bay)!…
Wonderful news! Let's hope that they never revisit the idea. Thanks for ALL that you and all who work for the NHC do for us.
Fantastic. Let's hope is this is the start of reason prevailing again.

By next spring, they need to devise a replacement program otherwise we will no longer have that data.
